Breakthroughs Begin: A Big Kick-off for Queensland's Boldest Startups

In late May we launched Queensland’s journey to the Startup World Cup - and it started with a room full of curiosity, energy, and big ideas.

Held at University Sunshine Coast Moreton Bay campus, Breakthroughs Begin wasn’t just a keynote and panel session. It was a gathering of founders, entrepreneurs, researchers and ecosystem leaders all focused on one thing: building what’s next from right here in Queensland.

So if you missed it (or just want the highlight reel), here’s the good stuff.

From deep tech to global stage: Kitea Health

Natalia Lopez, co-founder of Kitea Health and winner of the Startup World Cup 2024 NZ Final, shared what it takes to scale a deep tech startup - and pitch on one of the biggest stages in the world. Kitea Health is developing an implantable sensor in the brain to support people living with hydrocephalus. Kitea Health is disrupting the health care journey for people living with this chronic condition.

Natalia’s pitch advice

1. Know your audience - and speak their language
2. Start with the solution - lead with clarity
3. QR codes are your friend - make it easy to connect with other investors
4. Name-drop your wins and your partners - credibility builds confidence
5. Don’t rush — but do bring the energy
6. Know your IP and your pitch - inside out

Insights meet action: What the Panel Said

Big thanks to our community:

Here’s what they said:

  • We have the talent. Queensland’s universities are producing the next wave of innovators - we just need to connect with them earlier.
  • We have problems worth solving right in our own backyard. Agtech, sustainability, food systems, and manufacturing - it’s all here and waiting for solutions.
  • AI is changing the game. It’s lowering the barrier for non-tech founders and unlocking new ideas.
  • The health of our planet and bodies are intertwined. Healthy environments = healthy people = scalable impact.
  • Collaboration can’t wait. When researchers, founders and investors connect early, great ideas become investable faster.

Why do we do this?

Because even the youngest founder can create something that makes a difference. Because the next big thing doesn’t wait for permission - it starts with showing up.

From one of our youngest entrepreneurs, Sebastien Founder of sustainable apparel company, The Earth is my Place summed it up best:

“You reminded me that even if you're young, you can still create something that makes a difference.”

This is what we are all here for. This wasn’t just an event. It was a reminder that the next big thing can start anywhere — and often, it starts with showing up.

What’s next? One Queensland founder will pitch in Silicon Valley.

Applications for the Startup World Cup Queensland Final are open.
One founder will be crowned Queensland’s best - and pitch on the world stage in the US.
